If I were to die…

  • I use a password management application and have instructed my wife how to use it. This application holds all passwords related to my business, protected by a master password only she and I know.
  • My wife has a 50% stake in Katz Web Services, Inc. and will legally be able to act as a representative of the company.

This has been done many times by others, but just a quick tip on how to add or remove www. from your website’s address. This is helpful for URL canonicalization and user experience consistency. You can also achieve SEO-friendly canonicalization using rel="canonical". Oh boy, I’m getting too technical :-)

Here’s the juicy part:

Add the following to the .htaccess file in your website’s root folder (often named public_html or www). If there’s not a file named .htaccess, you may create it. If you are creating the .htaccess file, set the permissions to 644. For security reasons, you don’t want others to be able to write to this file.

Moving a domain SEO implications

Goodbye old friend. Hello shiny new domain!

Recently I moved my company’s domain from KatzWebDesign.net to KatzWebServices.com to reflect the change of the business name (over one year ago) from Katz Web Design to Katz Web Services, Inc., to reflect the in company services offerings, and to have a .com domain.

This is a simple switch, not re-launching a new website — just moving the same site from one domain to the next. Here’s how I approached the switch, and it’s a solid method to use for any domain switch:

Domain rush hour!

Domain auctions are a rush — and a great opportunity

Earlier this month, I was shopping around for some domain names, and I found out that BoulderSEO.net and BoulderSEO.org were available, and that BoulderSEO.com was expiring shortly and going up for auction. I had never backordered a domain before, but for $18.95, it was worth trying out.

New Yahoo! domain prices — can they be serious?

Is Yahoo! nuts? They want too much moolah (piles of money)

Is Yahoo! nuts? They want a 351% increase for domains!

Might as well say “This is Yahoo calling…and we need your money.”

I just got an email from Yahoo! Domains (where I registered madeindenver.com) that says the following:

Important note: Beginning on July 1, 2008, Yahoo!’s annual domain renewal price increases to $34.95 per year.

Yahoo is going to charge $34.95 a year for domains, up from $9.95. This is unbelievable. I know they’re trying to bolster their bottom line so Microsoft and Icahn stay away, but is charging 351% more than before, and 500% markup the way to do it?

Duplicate Content over Multiple Domains – SEO Issues?

May 30, 2008

Duplicate Content

I recently purchased some domains for SEO, and I wanted to do some research about best practices for using multiple domains on the same content.

The good news?  Google does not punish duplicate content; they just sort it out themselves.

Gettin’ Me Some Domains for Search Engine Optimization

Since Katz Web Design is going to be more active in Denver search engine optimization, I finally registered some domain names that I’ve been eyeing. Since domains are important for S.E.O. and KWD doesn’t have any SEO domain names, it was a ripe time to buy.

Bought

  • denverseocompany (.com and .net)
  • denverseo (.info)
  • seodenver (.biz and .info)

Want to sell

There are also a few domains I’d like to sell, since I didn’t end up using them; I was the president of a chapter of Colorado Business Leads for a while, and I had planned to make a member directory website as an added benefit, but (no surprise) I was too busy.
