New Yahoo! domain prices — can they be serious?

Is Yahoo! nuts? They want a 351% increase for domains!

Might as well say “This is Yahoo calling…and we need your money.”

I just got an email from Yahoo! Domains (where I registered madeindenver.com) that says the following:

Important note: Beginning on July 1, 2008, Yahoo!’s annual domain renewal price increases to $34.95 per year.

Yahoo is going to charge $34.95 a year for domains, up from $9.95. This is unbelievable. I know they’re trying to bolster their bottom line so Microsoft and Icahn stay away, but is charging 351% more than before, and 500% markup the way to do it?

If you’re going to pay too much money for something, you might as well treat yourself to Starbucks and enjoy it.

People are pissed off.

Yahoo needs all the good press it can get.  This was stupid and an abuse of their stature.

    I had the same experience. Actually I just move my names from Yahoo!. Godaddy and Name.com charge less down $10 … try them out

    I just moved one of my clients’ domains over — he had 6 domains. Yahoo must be bleeding!

    It looks like many person in the same boat! I heard that Yahoo make no profit with domain business and they are looking for the way to minimize this loss by increase domain prices. Yes, it is the time to act for Yahoo domains now. I have found new registar with cheap domain transfer rates and I will start moving now!
    As the increase infomation has been sent out by email from Yahoo and you see nothing about pricing increase from your Yahoo domain account so for sure, many persons (did not read the email well) will cry when they see the bill!!!

    I did n’t get ANY email from them notifying me of the proposed price increase (ripoff). Yet they insist I ought to pay.

    @nick – Why is it that big companies like Yahoo! sweat the small stuff? It would seem that keeping customers happy would trump $20 bucks.

    Wouldn’t it be nice if we all had a bullet-proof legal team working for us?

    Thanks for writing this Blog Post.

    I have faced exactly this same situation with Yahoo.

    Actually my situation was even worst,
    because, after I transferred my Domain Name to another registrar, I was still charged by Yahoo (1 month later), for a service they were NOT providing me!

    I believe if you are hosted at yahoo and they consider you are violating any TOS they at some point have the right to restrict your access to the hosting area but you should be able to access the domain control panel.

    I purchased a domain from them to get the nice price but never hosted my site at yahoo. When the renewal date was approaching I simply transferred my domain elsewhere with no pain.

    As I said, one thing is hosting and another domain names so they are being unfair applying the same criteria to all your account.
